READ REGULARLY

Many great lawyers, politicians, and professionals are known to draw new ideas from books. Benjamin Netanyahu, one of the greatest politicians of the 21st century is known to read an extraordinary amount of books, which he uses to draw new ideas. Similarly Bobby Fischer was known to ransack chess books & periodicals for new ideas. Joshua Foer in a speech at 99U notes that how good a chess player becomes at the higher levels is more related to how much they study the games of grandmasters than how much time they actually spend playing chess.

Joshua Foer also notes that to become better you must get out of your comfort zone. After doing something for a while many professionals get in the habit of doing their job autonomously. The problem is they just keep practicing what they already know how to do. Joshua Foer gives the example that the top figure skaters in the world are not the ones that practice the most. They are often the ones that fall the most in practice. The reason being the skaters that don't fall are just practicing jumps they already know how to do. The skaters that do fall in practice are trying to learn new skills. Reading is one of the best ways to come. up with new ideas you will continue to find new ways to improve your skills in advocacy. In the modern age there are many great resources to draw new ideas from such as podcast, seminars, and YouTube. These are just a supplement for reading, and not a replacement.

Finally writing down your ideas will help you keep track of them. Shane Read in Winning at Public Speaking recommends that you keep a journal.
